Abstract : Gauss wrote down a sum involving roots of unity affected with signs in a precise manner. He was able to compute its square but all his efforts to compute its precise value failed for many years. Finally, he succeeded in evaluating it in a flash of inspiration. We shall show how p-adic numbers can be used to give a nice proof of this result about complex numbers.
