Title of the talk: Anatomy of Groups: Composition Series and the Jordan-Hölder Theorem
Date: 11 August 2026 | Tuesday
Time: 9:15 pm onwards
Venue: Cdh 2 discussion room
Abstract: The primary aim of this talk is to explore how complex groups can be understood by breaking them down into simpler, irreducible components using composition series and the Jordan-Hölder theorem. After a quick brush-up on quotient groups and simple groups, we will examine composition series and their uniqueness. Building on this, we will explicitly use the Jordan-Hölder theorem to demonstrate the equivalence of any two composition series for a given group. Viewed as the cornerstone of the broader Jordan-Hölder program, this result offers deep insights into the classification of mathematical structures. The talk will be accessible to all students, though basic familiarity with group theory will be helpful.
