Abstract: In this talk, we shall explore how modern algebraic ideas have their origins in number-theoretic problems. In attempts to get nice structures on certain number fields, the giants of 19th-century mathematics developed tools which ultimately laid the foundation of modern commutative algebra. We shall look at some of these problems and try to understand their significance.
