Biodegradation of Nanomaterials: Though nanomaterials have revolutionised the biomedical landscape, their long-term fate within the organism remains poorly understood, hindering their clinical translation. The biodegradation of nanomaterials by immune cells, particularly neutrophils, through myeloperoxidase (MPO) secretion, is a potential route for nanomaterial clearance (degradation) (Kurapati et al., Nat. Biodegradable for Biomedical Applications: Based on the biotransformation of nanomaterials, “Functional Biomaterials are Developed following Safe-by-Design for Biomedical Applications”. Functional biomaterials are composed of degradable nanomaterials combined with biopolymers or biominerals for drug delivery, bioimaging and bone tissue regeneration applications. We employ 2D materials such as graphene oxide, MoS2, and MXenes, in combination with biopolymers or biominerals for biomaterials.
Anti-Biofilm and Antifouling Coatings for the Medical Implants: We are also developing multifunctional materials to prevent and eradicate bacterial biofilms on medical implants and on marine surfaces (Mahesh et al., ACS Appl. Bio Mat. 2024, Nanoscale 2026, Chem. Asian J. 2026). Graphene composite materials are being investigated as anti-biofilm coatings and antifouling paints to prevent biofilm formation on medical implants and corrosion of ships, using the inherent antimicrobial properties of 2D materials such as graphene in combination with other functional materials.
Sustainable Bioplastics, Polymer Composites and Plastic Recycling: Further, we are developing bioplastics and protein-supplements from sustainable resources like agri-waste (Materials Advances 2025, ShellSynth Pvt. Ltd.- Start-up) and developing efficient plastic recycling for sustainable manufacturing (Indian patent filed, Shaya Polymers, Chennai).
